I went contradancing at the civic center last night with [personal profile] fabrisse, who is more used to English country dancing. She got dizzy and had to sit out a bit, and it was hotter inside the dance than outside the building, but we had fun.

Sadly, Le Vent du Nord had to postpone their appearance until May, so the band was Dead Sea Squirrels instead.

Also, it turns out the Mediaeval Baebes are playing the Institute of Musical Tradition concert on the 24th of September. Definitely going to do that, and if anyone wants to come with, let me know!
I went to the 2nd Thursday contradance at the civic building -- it was a lot of fun, even though I had to leave early and I was sweating pretty freely.

But I have to get up for work in the morning, and staying out past 10 doesn't help with that.

So... next month, Le Vent du Nord is going to be the band, on Sept 13th. If you're into social dance, the Metro will be reconnected on the Red Line, and travel will be easier. I'd love to dance with you.

I went with my friend A to see A Matter of Life and Death (AKA Stairway to Heaven) today -- it's a 1946 film about a bomber pilot who miraculously survives bailing out without a parachute, and then has the celestial bureaucracy come after him because one of their conductors missed him when he was supposed to be collected.

The conceit of the living world being in Technicolor and the next world in black and white really worked well, and there were some hilarious character notes, like when a bomber crew of Americans come into the heavenly processing area and are delighted to find a Coke machine, or when the first jury is replaced for being made up exclusively of people who would have a bias against the pilot for being English, and the new jury is made up exclusively of 1st generation Americans of exactly the same ethnicities! Also, the judge of the afterlife trial had an excellent Voice of God, and will be an actor I "Hey, it's that guy!" in the future.

On Friday, [personal profile] fabrisse, A, and I went to see the Mixed Masters ballet program at the Kennedy Center. It was Serenade by George Balanchine, Symphonic Variations by Fredrick Ashton, and The Concert (or, The Perils of Everybody) by Jerome Robbins, which was hilarious -- and I've never seen a comedic ballet before!
Friday: saw King Charles III at the Shakespeare Theater.

Saturday: went to Millennium Stage for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater workshop based on his signature work Revelations: we did "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel", "Wade in the Water", and "Rocka My Soul iin the Bosom of Abraham", admittedly with somewhat simplified choreography -- nobody was asking a group of amateurs to do hinges, after all. It was a lot of fun, but I did have the usual problem of children who weren't participating but were running around being underfoot. I don't want to trip on or knock over a 7-year-old!

Sunday: a short excursion to Labyrinth Games & Puzzles -- we got sucked into the jigsaw puzzle vortex, as they had a Ravensburger Antique Map puzzle out for fiddling with, and the salesclerk helpfully showed us the roll-mats for puzzles, so there are tentative plans to have an all-day puzzle party sometime soonish. Then dinner at Belga Cafe. We got a couple of waffles to share as starters, and then entrees. Desserts we decided to share among the table -- basically, we'd talked [personal profile] greenygal into ordering the asparagus beignets with candied asparagus and asparagus ice cream, and everyone wanted to try a bit of it. We actually ordered every desert except the endive clafoutis...maybe next time?..but I think the best dessert was the warm cherry almond cake.

Monday: stayed in bed with a head cold... which is a let-down after a very fun weekend.
